“My 4th Favorite Scene” or “The Apple Rolled A Bit”
Vector Prime
I know Vector Prime probably sparks more emotion than any other novel in the Star Wars Expanded Universe. There are people that hate this book because of, spoiler alert, the death of Chewbacca, and there are those that love this book because of the death of Chewbacca and the element of the unknown that this threw into the Expanded Universe. Being a Han Solo and Chewbacca guy, I of course did not like the death of Chewbacca. I love Han and Chewie for their banter, their friendship, and especially because of their willingness to fight the fight without the aid of the force, but as much as I wish Chewbacca did not die, I cannot deny the brilliant response to Chewie’s death by Han penned by R. A. Salvatore. It was brilliant and my 4th favorite scene of all time.
Spoiler all over the place here so be warned.
Chewbacca dies saving the life of Anakin Solo because a moon is about to crash into this planet, which is quite appropriate. Who is Star Wars has a bigger heart than Chewie? If you did not say no one, than
you are wrong. Chewbacca has been following Han Solo around the galaxy for decades over this “life debt” because Han saved Chewbacca from slavery. Needless to say that Chewbacca saves Han’s life over and over, and dies
saving his son. It was poetic…absolutely gut wrenching…but poetic.
