People keep telling me that there is more to the expanded universe than just the novels, and that I should check out the comics because they are great too. Well after twenty three more novels, I decided to give the comics a chance. After all what makes the movies and cartoons of Star Wars great are the images, and what makes the novels great is how you can dive into the mind and heart of the character, so comics have the chance to put those two aspects together to be something truly special. So as Luke tells Ben in Omen, when you face a daunting amount of material, start at the beginning. I thought this was good advice when facing the daunting amount of the comics, so I decided to begin with the Marvel Star Wars series that were published in 1977 alongside the movie.
The first six issues of the Marvel Star Wars series is a comic adaptation of the movie Star Wars: A New Hope. I have to say that when I began to read these comics I was worried that with the space constraints of a comic book that they would not be able to tell the tale very well. I was delightfully surprised by how faithful the comics were to the movie, and how it not only gave you main story, there is new material that did not make it into the original release or the re-release of Star Wars. You get bonus material. That was an unexpected joy, but let’s begin by looking at the first three comics of this adaptation of the movie.
