Episode 10 “Everybody’s Got Black Hats” or “Tying In Greg Cox” of your Star Wars Book Report

Brand new expanded podcast.  It is like getting two podcast for the price of one.  In the first part of this mega-episode, Wayne Chamberlain and I share what we are currently reading which is The Force Unleashed for me and Heir to the Empire  for him, and then we launch into a wonderful discussion on the villains of Star Wars and how the villains make the story just as much as the heroes do.  We discuss different types of villains and where to find them.  We share our favorite villains and so much more.  Thrawn, The Emperor, Vader, Dooku, Fey’Lya are all in here and we also discuss whether or not the Dark Side of the force is a villain.  Enjoy

Also, in the second part of the interview we have a wonderful interview with New York Times best selling author and multi-Scribe award winning author Greg Cox stops by to discuss his 4400 novels and what is it like to write tie-in work with such legendary characters like Batman, Superman, among others.  He also shares what he is watching on TV.  Greg Cox was fun and he is a true fan of Sci-Fi.   The Greg Cox interview begins at about the 1:09 mark.

Thanks for listening…we appreciate your time.

“Bottoms Up” or “Mando-a-Mando”

This review is a review of Abyss by Troy Denning and contains spoilers, so be wary of the prior to reading.

Novels or Series Mentioned

Abyss

Star by Star

Dark Nest I: The Joiner King

The Fate of the Jedi

Troy Denning is quickly rising on my favorite Star Author list.  Star by Star was an epic story that was written and handled very well.  I recently posted how much I enjoyed Dark Nest I: The Joiner King even thought there were numerous reasons for me to hate it, since I am quite the traditionalist and do not like change.  Both of those novels are testaments to Denning’s writing skill, and Denning’s writing skill is also on display in Abyss

Denning is an excellent writer of action.  The way Abeloth’s planet was filled with action with the venomous and dangerous foliage.  I know dangerous plants do not sound thrilling, but Denning writes them in a way that keep you on your toes because you know at any moment another attack is coming from left field, and I enjoyed that constant danger while reading.

“A Cheek Lickin’ Good Time” or “Who Let the Rancors Out?”

This is a spoilerful review of Omen by Christie Golden.  It does mention specific plots and may give away information that you may not want if you have yet to read this book.

Novels or Series Mentioned

Omen

Outcast

The Fate of the Jedi

The Thrawn Trilogy

The Legacy of the Force

The New Jedi Order

We Star Wars fans tend to go a tad over board, and the one thing we all love to jump on all the things that frustrate us.  We scream about Mando and continuity.  We argue and argue about the Mara Jade comment about the Emperor cutting of Vader’s hand.  Just in the last book of this particular series Outcast we got all up in arms about the mysterious return of Kessel’s moon, or as was pointed out to me when I was speaking of this very matter, did Kessel have two moons.  These are the things we love to talk about that we rarely spend time on the things we enjoy about this universe.  Well I must dole out some high praise for the strategy behind The Fate of the Jedi series.  I mentioned this in my review of Outcast that I enjoyed the seemingly fragmented storyline, and I still do.

I am not a hard man to please.  For a little proof of this fact, I am a Chicago Cub fan…that should let you know that it does not take much to make me happy.  Get an old guy who loves baseball with all of his heart and give him a pair of funny glasses and you will make me smile all day long.  I don’t care that the Cubbies never win.  I still root my heart out for them.   For those Star Wars readers who do not know the futility that is the Chicago Cubs, this is like enjoying Waterworld, which I did.  The dude had gills, and it was like Mad Max on Jet Skis.  For those Star Wars readers who did not see Waterworld or know the Cubs, this is the equivalent of loving The Truce at Bakura, which I do by the way.  I was so hoping that Dev would become a Jedi apprentice to Luke, and who hasn’t dreamed of having their brainwaves moved from our fragile bodies and into an indestructible machine.  Wasn’t Robocop the coolest guy ever?…well, I feel I have shared too much, so let’s move on.  The point is, I am not overly critical of anything, but yet I found myself being critical of the Legacy of the Force series in general for several reasons.
