What a jam packed episode we have for you today!  It is John Jackson Miller day here at the podcast.  Wayne and I discuss The Lost Tribe of the Sith e-book series written by John Jackson Miller, which is absolutely free online.  You can find links to download these e-books plus more information on John Jackson Miller at his writing website at http://www.farawaypress.com.   Wayne and I enjoy breaking down this series which ties into The Fate of the Jedi series and Crosscurrent, and more.  If you are trying to get your friends to enjoy Star Wars reading it is a great introduction to the written Expanded Universe because well, they are free and a good read.

Also, we interview John Jackson Miller himself who is right in the middle of so much withing the Star Wars Universe right now.  He is writing a newly released comic entitled Knight Errant, from Dark Horse Comics, http://www.darkhorse.com, the above mention e-book series, and has his first Star Wars novel set to be released January 25th 2011.  We discuss the differences in writing in these different mediums.  We discuss his comic collection and work as a comic historian, which can be enjoyed at http://www.comichron.com.  He also tells us how writing Star Wars is like camping in a national forest, and where is the best place to watch a college football game.

The Force Unleashed by Sean Williams

I have completed this novel, and I have to admit this novel bothered me on so many levels…pun totally intended.  If you have read my Daily Reading Update part 2 on The Force Unleashed there will be some repetition here.  This novel is just so over the top, filled with galaxy altering events that will shape the Expanded Universe, that there was not enough space to adequately cover these topics.  In my Daily Reading Update part 2, I mentioned how Starkiller faces 3 post purge Jedi in just 92 pages.  That is 3 monumental events in the Expanded Universe to learn of 3 post purge Jedi and one padawan.  Since those 92 pages, Starkiller learned that there was another Jedi who survived the initial purge in his father.  We learn of a total of 5 new Jedi that survived the initial purge.  Words cannot adequately describe how huge this is, but this just scratches the surface of the Universe altering events that were in this novel. 

We are also introduced to some serious Rebel Alliance leadership like Bail Organa, Leia Organa, Mon Mothma, and Garm Bel Ibis, and they are secondary characters.  This is a pre-rebel alliance look into these characters, which is another huge event. 

In the last third of this book, we have Starkiller who breaks Bail Organa out of prison and then takes down a Star Destroyer construction facility, and through these two acts becomes trusted enough to observe and actually become the founder of the Rebel Alliance as the rebel leaders give their allegiance to him.  Not only do we have 5 new post purge Jedi, we have the actual founding of the Rebel Alliance, and that founding is a side story…how can something this huge be a side story?

The Fate of the Jedi

The Lost Tribe of the Sith series are a collections of e-book novellas that give the back story of the Sith found in The Fate of the Jedi series.  It really reminds me in novel type to Outbound Flight, but that was Timothy Zahn giving the back story for his own story.  This is John Jackson Miller giving back story thousands of years earlier in the time line for three different authors.  I can imagine that to be tough.  John Jackson Miller is a veteran of writer of Star Wars comics, and that comes out in these novels as he packs a lot of story in a small space.

Growing up on comics there was one aspect of this book that I enjoyed, and that was the written sound effects.  For comic fans words like bamf and snikt have become household words, and for fans of the 60’s batman series, and who isn’t, saw pow, thwack, all pop on the screen with each punch.  From my comic experience, I liked the fact that Miller wrote out thoom instead of just describing the sound.  It was a very nice touch.
