From Wayne’s Brain – A. C. Crispin Interview on Price of Freedom
The Sudbury Star
No one knows for sure who came up with the line freedom is never free, but it has certainly rung true through the ages.
There is often a price to be paid for pursuing — or achieving — one’s dream, but at what cost freedom?
Author A. C. Crispin tackles that question in her new novel, which looks at the price one particularly iconic pop culture character pays for his freedom.
Pirates of the Caribbean: The Price of Freedom is the backstory of Capt. Jack Sparrow and details his early career prior to the events of the first movie — Curse of the Black Pearl.
Crispin, whose first name is Ann, is no stranger to crafting tie-in novels that relate the backstories of iconic characters. She wrote the Han Solo Trilogy of novels — The Paradise Snare, The Hutt Gambit and Rebel Dawn — in the Star Wars expanded universe, as well as the Star Trek novel Sarek.
In fact, her backstories have proven so successful that it’s somewhat of a calling card for her now. Despite the constraints of dealing with established characters, she enjoys the challenge of coming up with interesting scenes that detail what happened in a character’s past to make their established film character’s attitudes or motivations understandable.
