“Mel Gibson Would Be Perfect For Dengar” or “Bells and Dragging Cans”

Review of “Payback: The Tale of Dengar” by Dave Wolverton from Tales of the Bounty Hunters edited by Kevin J. Anderson.

There is a true talent in writing short stories, and Dave Wolverton has talent. I was surprised in a short form just how much I could connect to on character, but Dengar or Payback as he is known gripped me from the beginning. His ruthlessness in his first job, his justifiable psychotic obsession with Han Solo, his struggles with being part machine and a science project, his reconnection to his feelings…all of this made Dengar fascinating to me, and he is definitely a character I would want more stories to involve in the future.

Now that I am two short stories into this book, I am guessing that all the stories are going to involve or revolve around Darth Vader and his hiring of the bounty hunters in Episode V, but Dengar’s desire to hunt Han Solo goes much deeper than the money Vader was offering as Dengar and Solo have a history that dates back to Solo’s swoop racing days in the employ of Shrike.
